This past weekend Ellen and I walked 60 miles in the Philadelphia Breast Cancer 3 Day! We braved the cold (sleeping outside in fairmount park in tents), the wind, and the achy feet all in the hopes of finding a cure for breast cancer. As promised I dyed my hair pink (but the dye didn’t take). Instead Ellen and I went to Elayne James salon in Greenville, Delaware and got some pink hair extensions.
We started off this 60 mile walk bright and early on Friday (October 17th) at the Willow Grove Park Mall. (We had to be there by 6:30 a.m.) Once closing ceremonies were over, we were off and we walked from Willow Grove to Chestnut Hill all the way to Fairmount Park to our camp site. Once there we got our tents set up, retrieved our bags from the baggage trucks and settled down to camp for the night. (Boy was it cold!)
The second day took us all around Philadelphia from the Art Museum to South Street through old city and back to Fairmount Park to our camp site. (Never did a pink tent look so good!) The 3rd and final day took us out of Philadelphia through the Main Line to Villanova where we all attended closing ceremonies.
There were over 3,100 other walkers (both women and men) and 375 crew members (including medical staff) who camped with us, ate with us, and supported us in numerous ways along this journey. In the closing ceremonies we learned that the Philadelphia 3 Day raised over 8.1 million dollars for breast cancer research and community awareness events!!!!! Wow. In the end we were tired and worn out, but so happy to have joined together with so many others in this amazing event to work towards a world without breast cancer!
